ARTIST STATEMENT ON "EXPRESSIONS OF ZEITGEIST" EXHIBIT
by Pat Dunning, Ph.D.

As in the major body of my work, my current exhibit, "Expressions of Zeitgeist" are abstract compositions that, like other abstract expressionists, reject subject matter in favor of the quicker emotional truth of pure color and gesture.

Zeitgeist means "spirit of the times", the intellectual and moral tendencies that characterize any age or epoch. The paintings in "Expressions of Zeitgeist" are abstract expressions of subconscious mind images of the concept of "dualism" that are made manifest through the creative process.

This dualism is evidenced in the Western view of the world, which currently includes the immoral tendency to separate the worth of people in terms of racial (white/black), and economic (rich/poor) conditions within our country; as well as our relationship with other cultures (East/West). This zeitgeist is expressed through my paintings, the slippery uneven color compositions are rich and various in incident - a swirl of paint here, the scissors sharp edge there. I have created this dynamic tension of dualism in the use of contrasting colors, hot and cold mixed - lipstick pink and apple green patches along with quadrants of heavy cream and sky blue over forest green.

The path that I seek is a holistic one that will remove the illusions of separation that keeps us from seeing the reality of Unity Consciousness, which is revealed in some of my paintings.
